I am happy to announce my participation in a group show of former students of the Jugend Musik and Kunstschule at Streitbörger and Speckmann in Bielefeld. The exhibition is organised and curated by Manfred Schnell, my teacher at the school that - between 1982 - 1987 (?) - I attended once or twice weekly after "regular" school.
Together with artist Graem Whyte, I spend most of the weekend at his and Faina Lermans' Popps Packing, building the wood structure for my installation Wedge. Poppspacking The model of Wedge. This installation will be part of the Art X Detroit Festival and Exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Detroit and other venues, from April 6 - 10. The visual art at Mocad will be on view until April 24.
Caspar David Friedrich, 'Wanderer über dem Nebelmeer' ca. 1817, Kunsthalle Hamburg, Germany. Photo: hanneoria, fickr.com As I am preparing my installation "Wedge" at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Detroit in April, I often think about some of the paintings by Caspar David Friedrich. Some of his best paintings are in the Hamburger Kunsthalle. The "Wanderer" is one that I like a lot. As much I can identify with the moment that one experiences when reaching the top of a hill or an outlook after a hike only up, and feeling exhausted yet also the center of it all, it also makes me wonder. Who is this man? Who is looking at him from behind? And that landscape... too pretty to be true. One tries to have a change of vantage point, and what does he see or what does he feel? Make sure to visit Vimeo.com daily to see the small trailers introducing the Kresge Arts in Detroit fellows. Each day a video will be posted leading up to Art x Detroit.
